Should I prefer porcelain veneers or resin veneers?

Do you think it's time to get the smile you have always dreamed of?

Dental science is evolving tremendously and nothing is impossible anymore. If you want to improve the image of your teeth you can choose between porcelain or resin veneers. However you may be faced with the dilemma of choosing between two different materials - treatments. We will then answer basic questions about these two techniques, which serve the same purpose but have several differences.

What are natural porcelain veneers?

Natural porcelain veneers are a painless metamorphosis treatment of your smile and are placed on your front teeth. They are very thin porcelain flakes and in Smile Design they are made by a special dentist, from the latest generation of Swiss porcelain, in order to be glued to your teeth, but without creating wear. This is a technique that requires excellent knowledge of dental morphology and extensive experience, but without being impossible, as long as there is good communication between doctor and patient.

When are they used and how long does it take to install them?

Porcelain veneers are an excellent solution for teeth that have discoloured, worn or broken, crooked teeth, which have gaps between them, with fillings but also uneven in size. Even the whitest shade can be achieved or you can choose how your gums will look. You intervene in your smile, as you wish! Installing porcelain veneers at Smile Design Ltd requires a total of three visits in one week and the results last 15-20 years.

At Smile Design Ltd, with extensive experience and know-how in dental aesthetic techniques, we use e-Max Swiss porcelain veneers made by a specialist dental technician.

Are porcelain veneers installed without any grinding?

This is possible when the candidate's natural teeth are placed deeper and the purpose is to "pull" them out. Therefore there must be "space" to place the thickness of the face, to avoid an aesthetically bad result with "thick" teeth.

The ideal patient, then, is the one who shows small teeth or gaps in his teeth!

But always the tooth-gum finish must be sharpened because it creates a step in the joint and this can cause inflammation in the gums. In aesthetic dentistry, the following rule applies: "The more the dentist grinds, the more" space "the ceramicist has, so that he can place many layers of porcelain and the patient has a beautiful and natural result.

There is of course the case that the candidate wants a result of white-glittering straight teeth, without being interested in the transparencies and the natural shade. In this case he

can choose the porcelain without grinding his teeth. Of course, all this requires careful clinical examination by the specialist and the patient's visit to the dental clinic and not the "opinion" via video calls or telephone.

What are resin veneers?

Dental Bonding (dental soldering) is a painless and at the same time quick treatment for repairing worn, discoloured or broken teeth. You can get a natural smile with resin faces in just one visit to our dental clinic, lasting two hours without a wheel and without anaesthesia. The synthetic resin used is shaped so that it fits perfectly with your teeth and the result is completely natural and uniform. The goal of this technique is to cover the spaces between the teeth and improve their appearance, making them look longer if necessary.

At Smile Design Ltd we manage, without grinding a large amount of enamel, to "roughen" the teeth and creating the desired shape, closing gaps and covering large discoloured occlusions, while the dark denervated front teeth are "blocked". In the case of crooked teeth, they are corrected, but it is worth noting that this treatment does not replace orthodontic treatment in any way.

Resin veneers are preferred because of their lower cost. The duration of the result has to do with the design, the use of expensive resin materials reinforced with porcelain beads and with the processing, the "polishing" of the work. "The more" well-done "the final work of the dentist is, the longer the result will have. Finally, to maintain the attractive result it needs maintenance every six months.

Are the resin faces removed / can I change them?

They can be removed and redesigned. However, it is not possible for the patient to be left without faces, asking for his natural teeth back. This means that if you decide to do so you must be 100% sure.

Is resin bleached?

Resin veneers are artificial dental materials and cannot be bleached. Whitening is done only on natural teeth. If you are a smoker or drink a lot of coffee, Coca Cola, red wine and tea, then you will notice that they will gradually begin to darken. But by staying consistent in your appointment with the dentist every six months and doing the necessary maintenance, the polishing will return to its original form.

When do resin faces turn yellow?

As mentioned above, resin is a plastic material and has pores. This results in it absorbing pigments, unlike porcelain where the colour remains unchanged. In our practice, new nano-hybrid resin veneers are used, reinforced with porcelain beads that slow down the uptake of pigments and with the proper polishing, their "life time" is increased.

When do they turn yellow faster:

  • When the patient makes a lot of use of cigarettes, tea, coffee
  • When it does not return after six months for maintenance
  • When he chooses too white

How many teeth do porcelain veneers and resin veneers fit into?

This depends on the aesthetic problem of the individual concerned and the treatment - placement is individualised. For this reason the treatment plan is created after a personal discussion with the patient and a detailed clinical examination.

Generally, 6-10 sides of resin or porcelain are installed. Of course the number can be increased or decreased depending on the needs of the patient.

Porcelain or resin veneers?

The choice depends on the duration of the treatment, the cost, but also the time required for the final result. Resin veneers are installed in a single visit, last 8-10 years and have a lower cost.

On the other hand, porcelain veneers require a laboratory, therefore their installation requires 3 visits. The duration of the result is 15-20 years, so it makes sense to have a higher cost.
