Resin veneers: Advantages and Disadvantages

Resin veneers: Advantages and Disadvantages

What are resin veneers?

They are thin flakes made of synthetic resin reinforced with porcelain beads that are placed on one or more teeth only on the front surface of the teeth. The operation does not require anaesthesia and the operation is bloodless. The tooth "hardens" and after applying an adhesive "glue", the resin is gradually placed, which "hardens" with led. So gradually the tooth is "built" just like a sculpture. The restoration is multilayered.

While the interested party chooses B1 "child white" as the basic shade, behind it is a ladder of colours, transparencies, pigments that are placed so that the final shade is a natural tooth and not a monochrome lifeless restoration. I very often see lifeless restorations that create a thin, thick, ugly effect, monochrome and with a plastic image. These are not resin veneers, they are just bad, rough restorations.

Resin veneers painful or painless process?

Because the grinding of the tooth required is small, the rule is to apply the technique without anaesthesia. As a process, the grinding is done in a few seconds and it is required to weld the materials and create the required space, to be able to place the above-mentioned layers of materials, in order to avoid the "white chewing gum" effect.

When and where are resin veneers used?

When we have crooked teeth and we have excluded the orthodontist for treatment of choice, then we choose the resin veneers, that is why it is called the technique and "instant orthodontics" straighten our teeth in a visit of 2 hours and not in 2 years as an average orthodontic treatment requires.

  • When we have gaps in our natural teeth and we want to close them for aesthetic reasons.
  • When we have short teeth, with abrasions or cervical erosions because we brush intensely.
  • When we have a lot of fillings on our front teeth so that we do not make frequent changes due to the discolouration that exists.
  • When we want to intervene at the same time to change both the shape and the colour of the teeth.

What can we improve with resin veneers?

  • Tooth length
  • Tooth shape
  • Tooth colour.

What categories are there in resin veneers?

The categories of resin veneers are the "custom made" in the doctor's office or the prefabricated ones in the commercial one. At Smile Design, we choose only "custom made" resin veneers which individualise the problems of each tooth and at the same time interested. The results are excellent and the cost is lower than the prefabricated ones.

The prefabricated ones lack aesthetics.

Advantages and disadvantages of resin veneers.

Disadvantages

  • Relatively limited duration 8 to 10 years compared to porcelain veneers, which last twice as long.
  • With poor maintenance and abstention from 6-month cleaning and polishing, they discolour.
  • By abusing hard foods we have small breaks, which of course are corrected.

Advantages

  • Immediate, painless technique of improving shape and colour at the same time in one visit.
  • No anaesthesia required.
  • The interested party has a direct and active role in the final result since we can correct on the spot that it does not satisfy him.
  • Financial treatment.

How much do resin veneers cost?

Resin veneers are considered the next most economical treatment after teeth whitening where we intervene exclusively in the color of natural teeth. They are placed only on natural teeth and the final cost has to do with the number of teeth to be operated, the choice of restoration material to be used and the experience of the therapist and his artistic tendencies.

How many teeth can we place resin veneers on?

There is no rule. Generally, 6-10 teeth of the upper jaw and as many in the lower jaw lead to a satisfactory aesthetic result. However, since the arches of the jaws are wide and the back teeth are visible, we may need to operate on more teeth to cover the unsightly "black corridors" to the right and left of the cheeks.

Can we place resin veneers on old sealants or cases?

One of the important indications of resin veneers is the coverage of many fillings on the front teeth. An inviolable rule of dental science, however, is to change the old fillings first with new ones because they usually hide caries and then follows the aesthetic restoration with resin faces. Otherwise we "cover" and "decorate" the damaged teeth with a beautiful surface and from below our tooth continues to decay. Unfortunately, we can not intervene in the cases because they are made of synthetic materials and do not create a satisfactory weld.

The rims "cases" where they exist need to be replaced with your new colour.

Are resin veneers combined with other cosmetic procedures?

Resin veneers are a flexible treatment and can correct tooth or teeth in combination with porcelain veneers, crowns, cases, implants, whitening etc. Correct locally a problem that exists in a single tooth or more front or back.We can place porcelain veneers on the upper front to get the maximum aesthetics, put resin veneers on the back upper teeth to widen the arch and resin veneers on the lower teeth to match the colour of the upper and reduce costs. Or to restore a front denervated tooth without placing a case. The last option, of course, does not protect the denervated tooth from a fracture, it simply aesthetically corrects the "black" colour.

Is installing resin veneers a time consuming process?

In a visit of 2 hours we can aesthetically restore 10 teeth in the upper or lower jaw. It is considered a very fast dental choice with impressive results and long lasting result.

How many appointments are needed to install resin veneers?

Usually a visit of 2 hours for the restoration of 10-12 resin veneers in the upper jaw and another of equal duration for the restoration of the teeth of your lower jaw leads to an extreme make over of your smile.
