There is a belief that in the worst case, the only thing that can happen to us is bad breath, but things are not so simple!
These are the 5 problems that can be faced by someone who neglects to take care of their oral hygiene:
- Periodontal disease
It is an inflammatory disease of the tissues that surround and support the teeth. This inflammation spreads deep into the tissues and slowly there is detachment of the gums from the teeth and destruction of the bone that supports the roots of the teeth.
Usually, the patient realises the problem when the disease is quite advanced. According to research, periodontitis is considered the most common cause of tooth loss in adults and is usually more common in people over 45 years of age.
- Dental Plaque
Plaque is a sticky colourless "membrane" made up of bacteria and chemicals that they secrete. It grows on the teeth and gums, when it is in an early stage by brushing our teeth, it is easily removed, but if it is not removed, it gradually hardens and creates tartar. When the stone forms on the gum line it results in gingivitis. So, brushing our teeth does not allow plaque to form.
It is an inflammation of the gums, ie the tissue that surrounds the tooth. Swelling is usually caused by plaque formation, as mentioned above.
The symptoms are mainly red swollen gums that bleed when brushing teeth or when flossing. If it is not fought in time and the gums are still swollen, then it is more likely to develop into something much more serious, which is periodontitis!
- Tooth Decay
Caries is non-discriminatory, as it "appears" in both children and adults. It is created when we consume a food or drink, (especially if it contains sugar).
Mouth germs produce acids that wear out and pierce our teeth. If not detected and treated it can damage our teeth, kill the sensitive nerves located in their center and create an abscess. Caries is difficult to detect, frequent visits to the dentist will help to detect and treat it before it worsens.
- Bad smell
Bad breath could be a symptom of one of the dental problems we mentioned. It is certainly related to poor oral hygiene. When we do not brush our teeth we create the right environment for plaque and tartar. When we consume food, the residue that sticks to our teeth, if not removed by brushing over time, creates tartar. It results in bad breath.
We should not forget to brush our teeth, at least twice a day, to use dental floss and of course not to forget the dental solution. A visit to the dentist once a year is necessary and if you belong to the category of those who have more sensitive teeth, the preventive dental examination should be done every six months.
